An individual with unusually low blood sugar or glucose levels is known to be suffering from Hypoglycemia. Glucose is the key energy source in our body. In fact Hypoglycemia is not a disease but is more a sign of a health issue. Hypoglycemia is very often linked with diabetes but there are several other conditions that can result in low blood sugar levels in individuals. Most people realize when their level of blood sugar has dropped and they need to take care.

Symptoms of Hypoglycemia

If you are suffering from an early stage of Hypoglycemia you may have symptoms like nervousness, fatigue, tremulousness, dizziness, hunger, sleeping trouble, irritability and headache. More severe form of hypoglycemia can have more hazardous symptoms. You can experience fainting, seizures, convulsions or even coma. In fact if prompt treatment is not given in severe cases hypoglycemia can be fatal, although it is not common.

How Is Hypoglycemia Related to Diabetes?

Diabetes does not cause hypoglycemia by itself. In fact it causes hyperglycemia, the opposite of hypoglycemia or high blood glucose levels. Why is it then that hypoglycemia is discussed often in the context of diabetes? Diabetics are being given medicines to lower level of blood glucose and sometimes if the doze is high or effect is very strong blood sugar can "over shoot" and result in hypoglycemia. The effect can be bad if the person has not eaten proper food or has some other reason like exercises that has decreased blood glucose.

Causes of Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia can take place in other situations that are not related to diabetes such as alcohol ingestion, tumors secreting extra insulin or liver ailments. Slight low blood sugar level is seen in newborn babies but is sometimes severe in babies who have diabetic mothers. It is seen that some individuals develop hypoglycemia without a known condition.

Why is Low Blood Sugar Bad?

Our body requires fuel to work and one of the key sources of fuel is glucose or sugar. This is acquired by the body through consuming complex carbohydrates or simple sugar. Our body stores sugar in the liver in the form of glycogen for any emergency like extended fasting. When needed our body converts the stored glycogen to sugar by a biochemical process.

Brain is one organ in our body that depends exclusively on glucose or sugar. It can’t manufacture it and is totally dependent on other parts of the body for supply. If the blood glucose level falls for some reason or if our brain is in short supply of glucose it can affect brain functioning adversely.
