Supplements You Should Consider if You Are a Type 2 Diabetic

This article talks about vitamins and other supplements that are very helpful and beneficial to people with diabetes. There is a brief paragraph on each that explains each of their benefits to people with diabetes. They include Zinc, Ginkgo Biloba, Vitamin B12, Lutein, Vitamin D3, Alpha Lipoic Acic, and chromium picolinate.

I have been busy writing articles about certain supplements and vitamins that are important for the heath of type 2 diabetics and while I have written more indepth articles about certain ones and am planning on writing more I thought I would write a quick reference list of the supplements and vitamins that are important for people with type 2 diabetes and how they can be helpful. I am writing them in no particular order.

Chromium Picolinate - Chromium is important for the body because it helps glucose gets to the cells so the cells can use it properly. The picolinate helps fight the bodies natural resistance to chromium that is why the two are taken together as one supplement. Because of the boost that chromium picolinate gives to the cells it helps with iinsulin resistance.  It can also help a little with weight loss and weight management which is also something that is important to diabetics.  To read more about chromium picolinate and type 2 diabetes please read my artilce:  How Chromium Picolinate Can Help Those With Type 2 Diabetes.

Alpha Lipoic Acid - There have been several studies done on Alpha Lipoic Acid and the the results are comnig back in its favor for helping type 2 diabeties by helping to improve upon insulin resistance.  Evidence is also showing that it can help with the nerve damage that can be caused by diabetes called neuropathy. It is said to help with the symptoms of pain and tingling in the nerves mostly in the legs and feet.  On a side note this can be caused by certain cancers as well and Alpha Lipoic Acid is also good for people with cancer as well. Talk to your doctor before starting this or any other supplement to check for potential drug interactions.

Vitamin D3 - Vitamin D3 is very important for diabetics it is a very good for how stabilizing insulin levels in the body and fighting against insulin resistance.  It is also good for cardiovascular health and the immune system.  It is also good for healing wounds which is something that is more difficult for people with diabetes to do.  Vitamin D3 is very important and I encourage you to read more about it.  You can get more information by reading my article:  Why Vitamin D3 is Important Those With Type 2 Diabetes. There are two types of Vitamin D the other is Vitamin D2 which is also very important to the body for its own reasons but it is not as difficult to get Vitamin D2 then it is Vitamin D3 in one's normal life and diet.

Lutein - Lutein is important for eye health.  It is important for helping to combat cataracts, retinitis, and pigmentosa.  Diebetics are at extreme risk for developing cataracts.  I wish someone had told me about lutein when I found out I was prediabetic.  I went from having 20/20 vision to be nearly blind in my right eye in less than a year because I developed cataracts and I am only in my 40's.  Now even though my I have lost weight and my diabetes is under control and my over all health is good that damage can not be undone without surgery and even after surgery my eyes will never be the same.  Obviously Lutein is important for aging and eye health in general.

Vitamin B12 - Vitamin B12 is essential for healthy cells.  It is also important for cardiovascular heath. It can also help combat against problems with mind such as memory loss and dementia.  It also helps combat neurapathy which is nerve damage caused by diabetes and can cause pain and tingling in the lower extremties.  It is important for people who take medications for their diabetes like Metforming to have the vitamin B12 levels checked because Metformin and other drugs like Metformin can interefere with the body's ability to absorb B12.  For more information on B12 you can read my article: Why Vitamin B12 is Important for Type 2 Diabetics.

Ginkgo Biloba - Ginkgo Biloba is thought to reduce platelet hypersensitivity which can cause blood clots in diabetics.  Ginko Biloba can help to coat the platelets which helps to prevent the clots that can be associated with stroke and heart disease.  It is also known for helping the pancrease create insulin and can help increase its production.

Zinc - Zinc is very important for helping the immunce system work properly it also protects cells from free radicals because of its anti oxident effects, It is also important for helping carbohydrates break down carbohydraes for energy. Recent research has shown that zinc may be helpful to help ward off of heart disease in people with diabetes.  Zinc also helps the pancreas for insulin in fact it is very necessary.  Because our body does not make zinc on its own it depends on us to get it from food sources or through supplementation.  If you have read about how good nuts are for diabetics that is because they provide a nice source of zinc, as do meats, seafoood and legumes.
