What is Hypoglycemia

Our body systems function because the brain uses the sugar present in our bloodstream. If it cannot get enough glucose from the bloodstream, condition known as hypoglycemia arise. Having a blood glucose level below 50g/dl, the person will manifest hunger, shakiness, sweating, nervousness, dizziness, confusion, sleepiness, anxiety and weakness. If not given proper treatment or sugar replacement, unconsciousness, brain damage and death may follow. It can also occur when you are sleeping manifested as having nightmares, excessive sweating, feeling tired, confused and disorientation when you get up.

The brain cannot retain glucose which is the source of its energy utilized for all its functions. Lack of glucose is like a machine which is about to have an empty gasoline tank which needs to be replaced before it shuts down. Hypoglycemia or hypoglycaemia is most common with uncontrolled diabetes wherein there is an imbalance of intake of carbohydrates with the dose of insulin administered. Non-diabetic people experience hypoglycemia more commonly because of anxiety and hunger but not due to disorder of sugar metabolism which can easily be relieved by eating. Universal teaching for people who are likely to experience hypoglycemia is to have a candy in their pocket thus giving them an oral glucose for emergency case and sodas or juice are also recommended because it can be absorbed more quickly and contain more sugar.

Based from the publication of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, Patrick Boyle, a professor and researcher stated that severe hypoglycemia is a vital problem in the society and incidence of this health condition is rising around the world especially to those who are trying hard to control their diabetes. Unfortunately, these deaths were due to the adverse effect of drug over dosage.

In relation to the previous research, Philip Cryer, a President of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) shared that the common death associated with Type I Diabetes or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus was due to hypoglycemic events. These life-threatening events in hypoglycemia for diabetic clients were caused by their own maintenance medications.

Another terrifying cause of death in young diabetic clients is the Dead in Bed Syndrome which is caused by severe hypoglycemia. It is a sudden death without complications of diabetes. Usually victims of this syndrome have no signs of illness for the previous days but were found dead in an untouched bed the next day without a known cause.

As tips for those who have diabetes, eat small frequent meals with balance of protein and good carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates are unprocessed such as whole grain bread and fresh fruits; always bring with you some candy, juice or any snack you can fit in your bag because you’ll never know when you need it and don’t starve yourself, eat when you are hungry.
